Genting Highlands is a hill station an hour north-east of Kuala Lumpur, developed from the 1960s around Malaysia's only casino licence. At roughly 1,700 metres the climate is cool enough to have made the site a summer retreat long before the resort reached its present size.
The complex now includes several hotels, indoor and outdoor theme parks, shopping malls and a cable car from the valley floor. Muslim Malaysians are prohibited by law from entering the gaming floor, and identification is checked at the entrance.
