Macau is a special administrative region of China and the only part of the country where casino gaming is legal. Gambling has been licensed there since the nineteenth century, but the market as visitors know it dates from 2002, when the government ended a single-operator monopoly and issued concessions to several companies. Cotai, a strip of reclaimed land between the islands of Taipa and Coloane, was then built out with large integrated resorts.
Baccarat dominates the floors to a degree seen nowhere else, and much of the revenue has historically come from VIP rooms rather than the public tables. Entry age is higher than in mainland tourist markets, identification is checked, and photography on gaming floors is prohibited. Table minimums on the main floor are typically well above those in Las Vegas.
