Tunica County, thirty miles south of Memphis, was transformed in the 1990s when riverboat licences brought a cluster of casinos to farmland on the Mississippi. For a time it ranked among the largest American gaming markets by floor count, serving Memphis and the mid-South.

Competition from newer casinos in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma reduced the market sharply, and several properties have closed since 2010. The remaining casinos operate as drive-in destinations with hotels, golf and country music venues.
