Kangwon Land is the only casino in South Korea that Korean nationals may enter, opened in 2000 under a special law to replace the economy of a closed coal-mining district in the mountains of Gangwon Province.

The resort includes hotels, a ski area, golf courses and a water park, three hours by road from Seoul. Entry conditions for residents include visit limits, and the concentration of domestic demand at a single site has made the property a continuing subject of policy review.

Highlights

  • Only locals-permitted Korean casino
  • Built to replace a coal-mining economy
  • Ski area and golf courses on site
  • Visit limits applied to residents
