Loyalty programmes and comps
Free rooms and meals are priced from a calculation called theoretical loss. Understanding it explains every tier chart you will be handed.
Free rooms, meals and show tickets are not gifts and not quite discounts. They are a marketing spend calculated from a single number — your theoretical loss — and once that calculation is clear, every tier chart, points table and host relationship in the industry becomes legible.
Theoretical loss, the number that drives everything
Theoretical loss, usually shortened to "theo", is what the casino expects to win from a player over a measured period. It is the product of three things: average bet, number of decisions played, and the house edge on the game. A player betting £50 a hand on blackjack for four hours at perhaps 70 hands an hour, on a game with a 0.6 per cent edge, generates a theo of roughly £84. The same four hours at £50 a spin on double-zero roulette generates close to £400.
Comps are then issued as a percentage of theo — commonly between 20 and 40 per cent, depending on the market and the property's occupancy. This explains two things that puzzle visitors: why a large win does not increase comps, since theo is independent of outcome, and why a slot player and a blackjack player who staked the same amount are rewarded very differently.
How play is measured
- Machines: exactly. The card in the reader records every spin, stake and denomination, so theo is calculated precisely.
- Tables: by observation. A floor supervisor records an estimated average bet and the time you played, which is why the rating depends on being noticed — and why handing over a card when you buy in matters.
- Carded and cashless play: exactly, on both. This is one reason operators have adopted it readily where regulators require it.
Tiers and what they actually buy
| Level | Usual qualification basis | Typical benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Sign-up, free | Points on play, dining discounts, promotional mail |
| Mid | Accumulated points or theo over a year | Priority queues, free parking, occasional room offers |
| Upper | Sustained theo across multiple visits | Comped rooms, food and beverage credit, event invitations |
| Invitation only | Assessed individually by a host | Suites, flights, private gaming, no published criteria |
The two lower tiers are self-service and automatic. The upper tiers are discretionary, and the person who exercises that discretion is a casino host, whose job is to retain identified players. Asking a host directly what a given level of play would earn is normal practice and generally answered plainly.
Points, cashback and the network effect
Large operators run a single programme across many properties, which is the real asset: play earned in a regional casino can be spent on a Strip room, and the operator learns which regional players are worth marketing a destination trip to. Caesars Rewards and MGM Rewards both work this way in the United States, and Genting, Melco and the Australian groups operate regional equivalents.
Cashback — a fixed percentage of machine play returned as credit — is simpler and increasingly common because it is cheap to administer and easy for players to understand. It is worth reading whether it is paid as free play, which must be wagered, or as cash equivalent, which need not be.
The data question
A loyalty card is a consent to be measured. The record held on an engaged player is detailed: games, stakes, session times, dining spend, hotel stays, response to offers. In the European Union and the United Kingdom that data is subject to data protection law, including rights of access and erasure; in several Australian and Canadian jurisdictions the same record is also used for mandated harm-minimisation monitoring, with operators required to act on signals of harmful play.
That dual use is the central tension in modern loyalty schemes. The same instrument that generates marketing offers is now the instrument regulators use to require intervention.
Practical points for visitors
- Join the programme even for a single visit: entry tiers are free and cover parking and dining discounts that pay for themselves.
- Insert the card before the first spin and hand it over before the first hand. Unrated play earns nothing and cannot be credited retrospectively.
- Ask what offers exist before paying a published room rate; a rate quoted to a carded player is frequently lower.
- Check expiry rules. Points and free play often lapse within months, while tier status usually runs for a year or more.
- Understand that comps are priced from expected loss. If an offer looks generous relative to your play, the operator has priced in the visits it expects to follow.
Questions
Do I earn more comps if I lose?
No. Comps are calculated from theoretical loss, which depends on stake, time and game, not on the result. A winning session and a losing session of identical play earn the same.
Why do slot players get better offers than table players?
Machine play is measured exactly and usually carries a higher house edge, so it generates more theo per pound staked. Table play is estimated by a supervisor and, in blackjack especially, carries a much lower edge.
Is a loyalty card bad for me?
It is a trade. You accept detailed measurement of your play in exchange for benefits priced below their face value to the operator. The same data now also triggers the harm-minimisation checks that regulators require, which cuts both ways.
Can I negotiate a comp?
With a host, yes, and it is expected. The limit is your theo: a host can be flexible about what is offered, not about how much the play is worth.
