Sun City was built in the 1970s in what was then the nominally independent homeland of Bophuthatswana, where gambling was legal while banned in South Africa proper. Two hours by road from Johannesburg, it grew into a resort of four hotels, two golf courses designed for championship play, a water park and an artificial beach.

National legalisation in 1996 removed its legal advantage, but it remains the best-known resort in the country. The Palace of the Lost City hotel and the adjacent Pilanesberg game reserve are the draws that distinguish it from urban casinos.

Highlights

  • Built under homeland-era gambling law
  • Four hotels and two championship golf courses
  • Water park with artificial wave beach
  • Adjacent to the Pilanesberg game reserve
