Two tribal resorts a few miles apart in southeastern Connecticut hold the entire casino market for a region of more than twenty million people. Foxwoods opened as a bingo hall in 1986 and added casino gaming in 1992; Mohegan Sun followed in 1996 on the site of a former shipyard.
Both grew into very large floors with arenas, concert halls and outlet retail, and both now compete with newer casinos in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York. They remain the standard example of what the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act made possible in a dense urban catchment.
