Casinos in Atlantic City

6 venues recorded.

Atlantic City opened the first casino outside Nevada in 1978, built on a boardwalk resort economy that had been in decline for two decades. For thirty years it held a regional monopoly on the north-east corridor; when Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland licensed their own casinos, five Atlantic City properties closed within a single decade.

The surviving nine casinos split between the Boardwalk and the Marina district. The market has stabilised on a mix of day-trip visitors from Philadelphia and New York, conventions, and online gaming revenue booked through the licences. Beach access is free and the Boardwalk remains public, so the casinos sit in a civic setting rather than a closed resort corridor.
